5th Grade Team
Hello!! My name is Vicki Vesp and I am beyond excited to be teaching 5th grade at Vassiliadis Elementary School. I was born in Newport Beach, California, but moved to Las Vegas as a small child. Most of my childhood was spent growing up in Boulder City. I am a product of the CCSD and very proud of it!!! I received my Bachelors of Elementary Education and Masters at UNLV. I have taught in the district full time since 2002. I originally substitute taught while my own children were young. My first 14 years were at Bonner Elementary School. I have been a part of the Summerlin community for twenty-eight years, teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and absolutely love my 5th graders. It is extremely rewarding to watch my students grow into successful individuals.
I have been married for 28 years to my husband Gavin and we have two grown daughters, Taylor 27 and Mackenzie 24. I love spending as much time together as possible. I love traveling, shopping, cooking, going out to dinner, and just spending time with family and friends.
My favorite author is Judy Blume. I loved her as a child and like her even more as an adult. I believe that books teach us all kinds of life lessons. I can’t wait for the 2020*2021 school year to begin. My students become part of my life and preparing them for middle school is the adventure we will take together.

Hello to all Vassiliadis students and families! I love being part of the fifth grade team and the wonderful school community here at Vassiliadis Elementary School. I am originally from a rural town in Illinois. There were only 35 students in my graduating class and 850 people in the entire town! I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Western Illinois University and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from BYU. Throughout my teaching career (26+ years) I have taught fourth grade, resource, and fifth grade. I have taught in the states of Illinois, Utah, Iowa, and Nevada. In 1999, I moved to Las Vegas with my husband and two children. We now have four children, 3 boys and 1 girl. My three boys have since graduated from CCSD and are attending law school, grad school and undergrad. My daughter will be a freshman at Palo HS. Through the years I have sat through hours and hours of baseball, basketball, and football games cheering on my boys! Now we spend our weekends at my daughter's gymnastics meets.
In my spare time you can find me reading or shopping. I have an extensive classroom library and love sharing my passion for reading with my class. We also spend a lot of our summer and long weekends in Newport Beach, CA. Reading on the beach is a luxury I look forward to after finishing a great school year! I am looking forward to meeting the families of Vassiliadis ES and especially those fabulous fifth graders who will share my classroom with me!
Hi! My name is Mrs. Guía and I am thrilled to be a part of the fifth-grade team at Vassiliadis! I am originally from Columbus, Indiana, but have lived in Las Vegas for the past 20 years. I attended Purdue University for a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, then went on to graduate from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. While working at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York, I met my, now, husband of 26 years. We have two wonderful children. Spencer is a senior at ASU in Computer Engineering and Madeline is a sophomore at UNLV in pre-nursing. When my kids were younger, I was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom before returning to school to earn my teaching degree followed by a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. This is my 11th year teaching in the Clark County School District.
In my downtime, I enjoy hiking and camping with my three dogs, knitting, making cheese. I love reading and science and I hope my 5th grade students will develop a passion for both. My students can expect to engage in collaborative, hands-on activities where they can think critically and make connections. I am looking forward to making the journey towards middle school with my fifth graders!

Hello Vassiliadis Cubs! My name is Veronica Swenson and I am beyond excited and grateful to be joining the amazing group of teachers and staff here at Vassiliadis. Born and raised here in Las Vegas, I graduated from UNLV with a bachelors in Psychology. Our little family moved to Minnesota when our girls were younger and I earned my masters from St. Mary’s University in Curriculum and Instruction. I have been teaching here in Las Vegas for seven years now, and have enjoyed teaching second and third grade very much. Currently, I am finishing up my Gifted and Talented Education endorsement and am eager to implement these qualities and strategies into our classroom. I cannot wait to learn and grow with my new fifth grade students and team.
When we aren’t at school, my family and I are enjoying spending time together. My husband Ron and I have been together for 17 years and we have two amazing young ladies, Sadie and Madi. We love taking hikes at Red Rock and Mt. Charleston, and walking our three dogs, Sam, Baxter and our newest addition, Stella. We love taking quick trips to SoCal for much needed solar and beach recharging. If we aren’t out exploring some place, we are snuggled up at home watching movies and baking, or watching hockey! Go Knights Go!
I truly feel that my purpose on this Earth is to advocate and enrich the lives of children. My students mean so very much to me and ensuring they grow academically, as well as socially and emotionally, is the main goal of our classroom. As Antiope said to Diana in the recent Wonder Woman movie, “You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know.” There are many reasons I love this movie, but the overall themes of compassion, selflessness, and morality are key.
5th grade, here we come! Let’s make your last year of elementary a year full of learning and memories you’ll never forget!
Hello! My name is Mrs. Sotelo and I am thrilled to be at Vassiliadis Elementary School! I am originally from Indiana but have been in Las Vegas for over 30 years. I received my Bachelors in Communication at UNLV but a career change lead me to teaching and I LOVE IT! I obtained my Masters in Elementary Education and haven’t looked back. I am so lucky to be surrounded by amazing educators and I am inspired by my students on a daily basis. My goal is to prepare them for success both inside and outside of the classroom. I am married and have three children; two boys and a girl. Family is a priority and I have an amazing one! I love spending time outdoors and experiencing the excitement of life through the eyes of my kids. My two other loves are food and the Chicago Cubs! I can be caught watching about any show on the Food Network Channel. I am overjoyed to be teaching at the BEST school in the world and love being part of a family and community that values education and promotes student growth and achievement!
Hello! My name is Jaime Borkholder, and I'm super excited to be a part of the Vassiliadis family. I am originally from South Bend, Indiana, home of the South Bend Cubs (an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs). Vassiliadis has given me this amazing opportunity to transition from a South Bend Cub to a Vassiliadis Cub. While living in Indiana, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University with additional endorsements in both Life Science and Mathematics. These endorsements give me the ability to teach Science and Math up to ninth grade. For the last five years, I have had the pleasure of teaching sixth grade students. Every new class of students has brought me joy and challenges. Each year, I marvel with wonder and amazement at the growth my students and I make together.
In my spare time you can find me walking my mischievous dog, Gypsy, and spending downtime with family and friends. I love to read various types of novels and explore investigative shows. Every year my mother and I take a girl’s vacation to the beach. This beach can be found in the United States or even the Carribean especially Jamaica. When I cannot go to the beach, I visit with my brother and his family in Colorado.
I want all my new fifth grade students to know that they have me as their teacher for life. I enjoy watching my students grow in extracurricular activities as well as academics. As Vassiliadis events become available, I look forward to spending time with not only my students but their families. My hope is that my students and I are able to share our successes and challenges for years to come. I cannot wait to get to know all of you, my fifth grade students, this school year!
